My maternal gramps celebrated her (advanced) 81st last night, a boisterous evening with her kids, grandkids and greatgrandkids. We used to go to a private room in an uppity Chinese restaurant for this, but this year for an unknown reason we had it at Uncle Sam’s with a small table of catered food and some home-made fruit salad for dessert. And, instead of a store-bought cake, I took on the responsibility of making the cake this year. It turned out great, light and moist, though some of my aunts and uncles felt the cream was a bit too sweet (I’ll work on it). My nieces and nephews, however, scoffed down the treats with delight. I made over 60 cupcakes in two flavours — vanilla cupcakes with chocolate ganache and chocolate cupcakes with matcha cream. Only 36 cupcakes could fit on the tower, though, so the rest went into a box.
My mom just texted me: “Cupcakes taste even better kept in the fridge overnight.” Thanks mom!
It turned out to be a fruitful, jam-packed and tiring day, that started out with a shorter-than-expected 12hour-ultramarathon in the morn (I only ran three laps of the 10.5km macritchie northern route in 3h 2min, half of what I had intended because of various reasons — boredom, ignorant people crowding the route, my ipod died, needed to rush home to bake) and catching up with old primary/secondary schoolmates at a Christmas Tea Party at Fio’s.
We left Uncle Sam’s early and were in dreamland by 10.30pm. I like such days.

dear jeanette
saw u at macritchie but was talking to enrico (actuarix) and david tan (mythos).by the time i finished , the race was starting.
ran 3 rounds as well(3.35) but after my bike fall last week my leg was getting sore and was not carrying any food so bananas weren’t enough to sustain me …so decided to stop. enjoyed the run despite the crowded trails but the humidity was getting to me.
