Singapore’s new No. 1

Cheebs did it! Finally, after years of small hits and big misses, he finally won his first Asian Tour title. And, boy, did he do it in style. In a five-way tie for the lead at the start of the final day at the Volvo Masters of Asia in Bangkok, he showed his mettle to take the season-ending US$750,000 event by two strokes. This is a guy who had qualified for the prestigious tournament for the first time this year, after only securing his inaugural Asian Tour card with a sparkling performance at last month’s Barclays Singapore Open. This is a guy who almost gave up on the sport, who tried every ways and means just to improve his game. He’s brought me along to his yoga classes, he’s tried running more, he’s lapped up books on sports psychology, he’s listen to tapes to boost his mental game, he’s worked and reworked and reworked his swing, he’s never stopped toiling, and, most of all, throughout all that he’s never stopped being a humble, generous, patient and caring friend. He has offered me lifts back after press conferences, volunteered to teach me golf and even give me new grips for my clubs, he has always lent me a listening ear whenever I needed it and never once turned down my bugging him for an interview.

go cheebs!!

There couldn’t have been a nicer guy to win. Bloody awesome and inspiring job, my friend.
