I like it long

I think short course really isn’t my thing. I’m just not built to go fast… I’m built to go on and on and on… long, long, long. I like it long. No, I love it long. This morning I went long - 3h 27min to be exact. I started at 5.30am and ran and ran and ran, keeping a really easy pace so my heartrate was moderate, breathing never brought even near to a pant, legs miles away from feeling jelly-like. I didn’t really know how far I had to go to clock 3h 30min worth of running, so I just went down Buona Vista, Pasir Panjang, Keppel, through the CBD, past the Esplanade, Nicoll Highway, Mountbatten Road and all the way down East Coast Park.

It was only 2h past when I got to East Coast Park so there was still miles ahead… I ran till the carpark after Bedok Jetty, made a U-turn and returned by the ECP Service Road instead of the park’s footpath (there were loads of people out, people going in the wrong direction, army boys marching and singing their lungs out). I just wanted some peace and quiet and space to myself.

By the time I reached the petrol station at Mountbatten it was 3h 27min, and I called it a day. Bought a carton of chocolate milk, a bottle of H20 and a bottle of Coke Light and boarded a bus for home. Next time on my longer runs I’ll just run home.

It was a good run. I got by with one packet of gel (at the 2h 35min mark), two packets of repalyte and three bottles of water. Amazingly, without having any food before the run nor electrolyte drink on the run, my body functioned well. Just shows how much I ate yesterday!!!

Well, today was the toughest training day of this week. I’ll race the OCBC Cycle Singapore 50km this Sunday… which might be even tougher on hindsight. Anyway, easy week next week. Yaye! I survived yet another training block.

Anyway, here’s the route I did today:

The problem with mapmyrun is that the paths in parks are not marked out. I ran through three parks today, one after the F1 pit building, one next to the Kallang Tennis and Netball Centres and of course East Coast Park. I’m guessing I actually ran longer than I plotted on this!

Hello Jeanette! I’m an avid follower of your blog and triathlon enthusiast myself. You write some pretty inspiring, yet down-to-earth stuff. I’m really amazed that you can juggle your time with training as a national triathlete, full time journalist job and blog almost everyday!

    Well done, keep it up!

    hi kev!

thanks for reading. actually i’m no longer a national triathlete… but i think i actually put in more hours training now that i’m not.. because i’m doing more long course stuff now instead of short course.

as for the job, i think it helps i start work at 10ish, so i do get to do super long runs before work. i never leave training till after work cos i never know what time i finish, plus you’re more likely to feel lethargic or cook up some excuse.

as for the blog… doesn’t take much time! and it’s a good break from work anyway. plus i’d like to inspire people to exercise more, so it’s all good.

    thanks for reading again!
