It’s been a good one

To round off a great year, I treated my legs to an easy tenner over a new, shady and undulating route around Tanglin this morn. It was nearly a perfect morning — crisp air, sun creeping up behind puffy clouds, few pedestrians or cars. It was a thoroughly enjoyable run, my mind wandered and was eventually lost (I can’t remember what I was thinking about on the run), my legs flowed, my heart beat happily in a slightly stressed yet comfortable zone.

As I look back on the past 365 days, I have lots to be thankful for. At first I thought 2008 would be hard to top, especially with that first Sundown win. But 2009 somehow managed to trump its predecessor.

I won Sundown again, almost 30 minutes faster than before.

I won my age group at the Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore and qualified for the 70.3 World Champs in Clearwater, where I subsequently smashed my PB by miles (4h 55min).

I’ve become a better runner after a change of training methods. I returned to the track and welcomed intervals and hills with open arms.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, I traveled to Melbourne, Australia to interview Novak Djokovic (thanks adidas), to Portland, Oregon with 23 others for the Nike Hood to Coast race (thanks Nike), to Florida for the 70.3 Worlds (thanks Aviva).

I don’t know if 2010 will be able to top this year. But there really is no point in worrying about the future. Because it’s what you do now that determines what follows.

So, in 2010, I’m going to try my darnest — and hopefully you too — to live each day like it’s your last.

Happy New Year!
