Back in the day when nylon black Prada backpacks and their imitations were in fashion, when McDonald’s occupied the basement of Far East Plaza, when Parkway Parade had a brilliant arcade/indoor amusement park at the top floor… I played the guitar.
Under influence and tutelage from my elder brother, I jammed till the skin on my fingertips were sore. Some standout memories of my strummin’ days include playing for church worship, jamming with netball mates (we called ourselves “Hot Drinks and Snacks” after a food stall in the canteen, our tagline being “We were bread to jam”), performing a self-written song on RGS prom night and subsequently winning Miss Alma Mater for that, and performing at a first-year students’ concert at RJC with some bandmates.
Missing those memories and inspired by some guitar-playing friends, I went out to get a guitar yesterday after church. Just as well one of Singapore’s guitar shop hotspots was just around the corner. After a movie at Plaza Singapura and guitar-browsing at Yamaha, I ventured into Parklane and found Maestro, the five-year old Singapore-made guitar company.
A few moments later, in exchange for $269, I left with this:

The guy at the shop picked it out for me, and I fell in love with its tone immediately. Bonus cool marks for it being a special edition guitar with only 100 pieces. Besides, it’s good to support local! Read more about it here.
Okay, so I’ve just printed guitar tabs for various songs from Death Cab for Cutie, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, and the usual classics like Hotel California and Under the Bridge… now just need to get the feeling back in the fingers.
