Overwork skilled labour and underpay them.
I mean, it’s a valid suggestion right? And seems to work in certain industries close to my heart…
Of course in the end you may not be left with many workers… just the Yes men.
But the people up there don’t care. Cos to them, we’re as disposable as $1 Watson’s undies.
What about meritocracy? The favourites, a select bunch, go up and up. Of course they can excel, they’re given the most opportunities to. It’s a vicious cycle. The more they do, the more they deserve to get better jobs and money. While for the rest of us, even if we are as-qualified or do a better job… our progression eventually just slows to a crawl before we finally give up. Only those willing to — as a friend says — eat shit will stay on, till they finally rise above then make those at the bottom eat shit like they did.
What about work-life balance? A case of not practising what we preach. Seriously, if you work out how much money I’m getting by the hours I work, I think I’m better off doing some other job with less responsibility and sensible working hours. It doesn’t help that people up there don’t know how to make us feel appreciated. No “good job”, nor “nice work”. The favourites get praised, the rest — Wot you lookin at? Get on with your work!
Offices are filled with people who know only work as their life. Go out and feel the breeze in your face, smell the crisp morning air, hear the bristle of leaves under your feet. Staring, sitting blankly at their desks — fat people, divorced people, unhappy people, lonely people.
It’s a mad, mad chase… for what? Money. Why raise productivity? So we can be more competitive, so we can get more money. Money to buy homes so big we don’t know what to do with the space, to buy cars so fast that it’s useless on our 90kmh speed-limit expressways, to buy bling and handbags and clothes just to show the world, “Hey, I’ve made it.”
So, they rush. Rush in their expensive cars. Cyclists, stay out of their way, get off the roads, because you have no right to enjoy your life. The money-chasers, they have all the right to rush. Thirty seconds is too much to spare — that’s a couple of dollars down the drain!!
And the handful of us, whose only desire is to lead a content, basic life, get mixed up in this madness.
The morale of the story: Work for no one.

Work-life balance only looks good in the yearly company’s report. Companies don’t care. They jz don’t want to look bad. Reputational risk!
life is not about money, period. i hate the way our society is becoming. many i see cares about making more money (which is not wrong) but is this what we all want? why live a life that can only make a difference to yourself and you little family circle. what about the less privileged, the environment and those we need a little more attention?
This one is very well expressed, Jeanette. There must be many like myself who has to work, work, work for their upkeep, because I don’t know how long I will live & more importantly, how long my balance in the whatever can last. And don’t expect your children to take care of the older folks; nowadays, they have valid reasons not to do so. So people like us lower mortals have to grind on…….. bear the ’shit’ that is plenty around. Bless God that I have good health to work, still….

So true! many things we hear are just superficial!
Couple of years back, I was in Sydney for a work assignment. They really practise a healthy work-life balance, unless the majority of us here. Everyone seems to go home on time. One remark from one of the guys I worked with stands out. Why we do work? To pay the bills? No, we work to pay for the weekends.
