Swim swam swum

And so I finally succumbed this morning to swimming with SportInc after repeated invitations from Des, Ger and Mark. I figured there’s nothing like swimming with the best to whoop your ass into fine fettle. For the past few years since I quit the national triathlon team in 2005 I’ve been swimming irregularly on my own, so it was nice to once again swim in a squad with a coach. It may seem like a solitary sport that’s all about tracking a blue line on the ground, but swimming with a group really boosts morale and ekes out the best in you, even in a regular 6am training session.

What we did today:
600 warm up
8×50 kick
8×50 drills
800, 600, 400, 200, 100, 100
200 warm down
Total = 3.8k

I surprised myself by holding 1.45 pace pretty much for all the intervals in the main set (and pretty comfortably too), despite a relatively shorter rest than usual. There was 60sec rest between the 800 (14.03) and 600 (10.29), 45sec rest between the 600 and 400 (7.00) and 200 (3.27), and 30sec rest between the 200 and 100s (1.39, 1.38).

By 7.30am we were done. Some guys went straight to work. I took an easy ride home, showered, had the breakfast of champions (see below) and then rode to work.

You bet I’m gonna make this swim sesh a weekly affair…
