Under pressure

There ain’t anything more pressurising than to have the world’s best triathlete, Chris McCormack, and another kick-ass triathlete, Dan Plews, as your teammates.

Take it from me, I’m shittin’ in my pants just thinking about doing the relay at this Sunday’s Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore. Macca’s gonna blast the swim, Dan will fly on the bike…. and then it’s down to me on the run.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Well, all for a good cause — the Breast Cancer Foundation.

(Please donate here if you can!)

Why is Macca doing this? According to his blog:

“The aim of MaccaNow is to raise 1 962 800 dollars for our cause. This number represents 100 dollars a day for every day my mother was alive. I lost my mother to the disease in 1999 at the age of 53. My family was a family of 4 boys, and our mother was our life. This disease stole her from us in the prime of her life, and as a man I wanted to do something. Breast Cancer may be a disease that directly effects women, but as men it takes our wives, daughters, mothers, sisters and friends from our lives. I wanted to do something and with the birth of my two daughters my desire became even bigger. I set myself the goal of setting up my foundation after I won the Ironman World Championships in October of 2007, and gave myself the target of raising the 1 962 800 dollars as a celebration of my mothers life. I had achieved so much in my career, and my mother had missed so many of the big events I had won. We had talked about me winning world titles, World Cup races, Ironman titles and European events when she was alive. She was my biggest supporter and believed in me when I didn’t. I had represented Australia in 10 Teams since, and my mother saw none of this. She watched me win my first World title in 1997, and knew I was on my way, but crossing the line in Kona the year I had won, I was elated and empty all in one emotion. My mother would have been so proud, the icing on a career that has seen me win every major title in our sport. she had always told me I could do it and when I crossed that line in Kona, the last title on my list of races I wanted to win in my career, I missed my mum.”

For me, I thought it would be a good chance to use sport to give back to the community, after everything sport and the community have done for me. It’s so gonna hurt…. your donations will definitely ease my pain cos at least I’ll know something good will come out of it!

Best wishes for the Ironman race. Just wondering… have you ever tried out the Asics Kayano Series of running shoes? If not, which shoes do you recommend for marathon running? Hope to hear from you :)

    regards,

    Hi Rachel,

    Thanks for the well wishes!
Unfortunately, no I have not tried the Kayano though I have tried the Asics DS Trainer. I liked the DS Trainer because it was light yet had adequate cushioning.

It would however be inappropriate for me to recommend you shoes as
    1. There are a lot of factors — running style, technique, foot type, mileage, biomechanics, etc
    2. And even if I had those factors, I’m not a podiatrist or a shoe expert

I suggest you go to a podiatrist to get an accurate assessment of what kind of shoes you need.

Personally, I use the same shoes, the Nike LunaRacer, for all race distances — from 5km to 84km. I’m not sure if there is a shoe just for marathon running…
So anyway, yeah I’m no expert! Sorry but not much help!

Jeanette, thanks for the kind advise. I do have the Nike Lunar Glide and Zoom Victory. Both of which provides good stability since i’m a normal pronator.

I’m currently more into the college level cycling gig and marathon running but I do want to move on to training for triathlons.

Your life story has inspired me; keep running for glory! See you at Kona one day!
