N.Y.D.C? More like S.H.I.T.

Craving for a good salad dinner, we headed to the newly-renovated N.Y.D.C. at Holland Village last night. I had eaten their Farmboy Chicken Salad — a monstrous serving of greens plus other delicious bits — a few times before, prior to the restaurant’s makeover. So I figured it would be the best bet to feed my craving. Oh. I. Was. So. Wrong.

It started out okay though. I quite like their new look, new menus (not as cheap looking as before), relatively prompt service. Studying the menu’s three salad choices, I picked the one with the “WOW” label — I reckon that’s the mark for their famous/popular/recommended dishes?

But it was really all down hill from there. First the serving was about a third the size before, the greens didn’t look fresh, but, most importantly, the “juicy grilled chicken breast” looked like…

A few measly strips of dry shredded chicken

So I asked the waiter where my “juicy grilled chicken breast” was and he read the menu and said there it was. I said, no, that’s the cheaper Rancher’s Salad that has shredded chicken, oranges and something that like. Mine was the “WOW” Chef’s Salad, that cost a relatively expensive $13.50. For just a little over that price, I’ve had seriously good greens at P.S. Cafe, Brewerkz (Asian chicken noodle salad). At RawBar, another great salad place, it costs about a tenner.

In the midst of my complain, Damo’s Veggie Spaghetti arrived — no, make that Veggie Pasta. The difference is he ordered the spaghetti with veggies in tomato sauce, not the baked pasta slathered with cheese. Not helped by completely clueless staff, we decided to go. Okay, at least they had the decency not to charge us $5++ for the 10 pieces of potato wedges ($5!?!??! can you believe it?!?!).

We headed to our usual stop a few shops away, La Nonna, and as usual was not disappointed. Classic Caesar Salad ($16), dressing on the side, thank you very much. Free bread too.

How can a place like NYDC compete? I do hope the next time they bring their shutters down it’s for good, and not just a renovation.

Haha it’s okay, think a bad review on a blog is enough to put a dent to their reputation!
