Took it short and sweet today in the pool. Just wanted to get the blood flowing a little before tomorrow’s killer Lantau 50. But er, I think the set got my blood flowing a little more than I liked…

I tend to like to get a workout in on the morning of the day before a race because not only I don’t feel as lethargic on race day, but also I read somewhere that because you’ve probably been carbing up for the past few days, it’s good to deplete the body’s glycogen stores and when you do top it up again, the muscles store the glycogen better. This may be a little bit lost in translation here, but you should Google it, and trust me, it works.

Which brings me to one of the best parts of running an ultratrail: carb loading breakfast the day before. On the menu today was flaxseed and pumpkin seed muesli with apple yogurt; wholewheat toast with peanut butter and kaya; and half a bagel with creme de marron. That’s double what I usually eat for breakfast… yum yum.

Hysan Healthy Hike & Run

Wow, has it been a year? Today I returned to the place - Tai Lam Country Park - where I did my first HK trail race last year and got my first win.

I won again today, in the 13k event this time rather than the 21k, as I wanted to do something short and lung bursting and leg tearing in the lead up to Boston. Defo got that all.

Compared to last year the weather was about 10 deg C warmer, and the race also had more than double last year’s participants, so it made for a tougher race. (Albeit the 13 is seen as a “beginner” race compared to the 21.)

Very amused how they used last year’s startline photo in the prize prezzo backdrop, banner ads, promo materials, etc. Mr G and I were right in front.

I moved up an age group on Tuesday, and my lovely friends made it a memorable day by surprising me with a dinner party. Thanks guys, love y’all.

Started the day with a run, then work as usual in Taipo, then met Mr G for a drink at Lily & Bloom, and he then led me to the surprise at Oolaa. Best let the photos do the talkin.
